Everything You Need For Your DIY Mercedes 3.0L Sprinter Oil Change

I work on emergency vehicles at my current job and most of our ambulance fleet are 3.0L Sprinters. Here is everything you will need for your DIY oil change!

MANN HU821x Oil Filter

Before working on emergency vehicles I worked at a European specialty shop and we used MANN filters for every vehicle. It is the go-to filter brand for German vehicles. I currently use MANN oil and fuel filters to service our ambulance fleet. Your 3.0L diesel Sprinter uses this one.

  • Oil Filter Element
  • Consistently high separation efficiency
  • High dirt holding capacity of filter elements through high filter surface area

5W40 Diesel Oil

Here is where we could go on for paragraphs. Engine oil brands and specifications cause a lot of discussion and disagreements among professionals and DIYers. I am going to try and make this simple. First thing, you should always change your oil more often then what the manufacturer recommends. Do this with every vehicle you own. For your Sprinter I would recommend ever 6,000-7,500 miles. Since you are changing your oil more frequently than what is recommended the difference between, for example, BMW LL01 and LL04 standards become less important to you.

This Valvoline meets every standard of the oil I use at work for our Sprinters and its a good price. This 5qt 3 pack will get you the 13qts your engine takes and will leave you with some extra for top offs.

  • Formulated with top-quality anti-wear additives that go beyond industry and OEM standards in European vehicles
  • Premium antioxidants and cleaning detergents combine to safeguard against damaging deposits

I have never personally ran Rotella T6 in a Sprinter but I believe it would be a good lower cost option for camper vans that don’t get used much. If you perform an annual oil service but don’t ever make it a full 6,000 miles between services consider the T6. Keep in mind you will need to purchase the 3 pack plus one additional quart.

Oil Filter Socket

This is the oil filter socket you will need. I use the AST brand but any 84mm 14 flute socket will work.

Drain Pan

I am writing this article assuming people have the basic tools to perform an oil change so why recommend a drain pan? Your engine holds 13qts of oil so make sure your drain pan can hold that much!

  • Large Capacity: Holds up to 17 quarts or 4 gallons of used oil for easy disposal.
  • Sturdy Construction: Heavy-duty design with carrying handles ensures stability and portability.
  • Anti-Splash Lip: Prevents messy spills and splashes during the oil changing process.
